Lincoln-Tallman House Museum 440 N. Jackson St., Janesville, Wisconsin 1855 Italianate Architecture - is now a historical landmark and now best known as “The place where Abraham Lincoln slept for 2 days” The award winning Tallman House was built in the 1850's on the northside of Janesville by William Tallman, a lawyer. He was, at the time, building in a rather unfashionable part of Janesville but he thought it a better site for his house so that he could ensure proper drainage. The house is built from Milwaukee brick and is a beautiful, gleaming cream structure on North Jackson Street.
The house is famous because Abraham Lincoln stayed here in 1859 for two nights. Mr. Tallman and his son had traveled to Beloit, Wisconsin to hear Lincoln's speech against slavery. Mr. Tallman told Lincoln that he must give that same abolitionist speech to the people of Janesville and offered his home to Mr. Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln came to Janesville, gave the speech and stayed overnight in Mr. Tallman's home. He was due to leave after the first night but missed his train. His boots had been cleaned and stored in the room provided for same the evening before, without Mr. Lincoln's knowledge. When he arose that morning and could not locate his boots, he remained in his room. When the Tallman family became concerned that he had not joined them for breakfast, Mrs. Tallman went to discover the reason why. Jokingly, Mr. Lincoln told her he did not suspect that she was a thief, but he wondered where his boots went. She realized that his boots had been taken to the the "boot storage room" and the whole event became a memorable event. The house is operated by the Rock County Historical Society who are about 2 doors down from the House itself. The information received on a recent tour of the Tallman House is the source of these statements. This 26 room Italianate villa style mansion is the only private home still in existence that can boast Abraham Lincoln as an overnight guest. Also does weddings.
